Piero Lissoni for Cassina — MexCube Sofa
The MexCube is Cassina’s most flexible and quietly radical modular sofa — a system that refuses to dictate how a room should be arranged. Designed by Piero Lissoni, it is built from a family of individually padded and upholstered cube elements: seats, backs, and armrests that can be combined freely into linear sofas, L-configurations, islands, and face-to-face arrangements. Each element hooks to the next via a simple locking-plate system that takes seconds to connect or disconnect, making reconfiguration genuinely effortless. The cushioning — in feather or polyester wadding over steel and polyurethane foam — is generous and cloud-like. The upholstery is fully removable.
The MexCube lives in the space between formal and casual. Its proportions are deliberate and refined — low to the ground, wide in the seat, clean in its geometry — but the absence of a fixed composition means it adapts with equal ease to a Milan apartment and a weekend house. Available in fabric and leather from the Cassina catalogue, in an extensive range of configurations. The 272 Mex-Hi version offers the same modular logic in a raised, higher-seating-position variant.

Vico Magistretti (1920–2006) was a Milanese architect and designer whose Maralunga sofa (1973) introduced the first adjustable headrest in a production sofa — a typically clever functional innovation that won the Compasso d'Or in 1979. His Mex sofa is an earlier, equally beloved piece in the Cassina catalogue.
