Designed by Poul Henningsen for Louis Poulsen, 1958.
The PH Artichoke is among the most structurally complex and visually arresting pendants ever made — a luminaire assembled from 72 copper, steel, or stainless steel leaves arranged in 12 rows of six, each positioned to block any direct view of the light source from any angle while simultaneously reflecting light outward and downward in a warm, even distribution. Poul Henningsen designed it in 1958 for the Langelinie Pavilion restaurant in Copenhagen, and the geometry he devised remains so precise that the fixture has never required revision.
The Artichoke works on the same mathematical principle as all PH luminaires: every surface is calculated to redirect light without glare, creating an environment that feels lit rather than illuminated. The layered leaves create depth, shadow, and a sculptural presence that changes as you move around it. It is equally at home in residential dining rooms and large public spaces — scaled from 480mm to 840mm diameter.
About the DesignerPoul Henningsen (1894–1967) was a Danish architect, author, and cultural critic who devoted much of his career to the problem of electric light. Convinced that bare bulbs were physiologically and aesthetically damaging, he spent decades developing lamp systems that eliminated glare through geometry rather than opacity. His collaboration with Louis Poulsen began in the 1920s and produced some of the most important lighting objects of the twentieth century.

Poul Henningsen (1894–1967) was a Danish architect, author, and designer, and the most significant figure in Scandinavian lighting design. His PH (Poul Henningsen) lamp system, developed in the 1920s, was the first designed specifically to eliminate glare and diffuse light evenly in all directions without a visible light source. The PH 5, Artichoke, and AJ lamps remain the most celebrated designs in Danish design history.
