Poul Henningsen designed the Louis Poulsen PH Pendant Lamp in 1958 to provide 100% glare-free light. Its design is based on the principle of a reflective three-shade system, which directs most of the light downwards. The fixture emits both downward and lateral light. The name comes from the 50 cm diameter of the main shade. At the time the PH 5 was created, there was little consistency in light bulb sizing, so he designed a “PH fixture, which can be used with any kind of light source, Christmas lights, and 100 W metal filament bulbs.” To improve the light source’s colour reproduction characteristics, he inserted small red and blue shades to supplement and subdue colour for the eye—100% glare-free, elegant, and a striking, modern addition to any space.
