Designed by Michele De Lucchi & Giancarlo Fassina for Artemide, 1987. Winner of the Compasso d’Oro 1989.
The Tolomeo Classic is the definitive floor lamp expression of Artemide’s most celebrated design. It shares the same self-tensioning cable-and-arm balancing system as the original table lamp, standing on a weighted disc base and extending through a single articulated arm to a polished aluminium shade. It moves effortlessly, holds its position without locking mechanisms, and directs light with the same precision that made the Tolomeo family famous.
Available with an integrated dimmer on the head unit and with Tunable White LED technology, the Tolomeo Classic can transition between warm and cool colour temperatures to suit the time of day and task at hand. This is a lamp for reading, for drawing, for concentrated work — engineered to serve without drawing attention to itself, and beautiful enough to earn attention regardless.
About the DesignersMichele De Lucchi trained at the University of Florence and was a founding member of the Memphis Group before heading design at Olivetti. Giancarlo Fassina contributed rigorous mechanical engineering to the collaboration. The Tolomeo has been in continuous production since 1987 and is part of the permanent collection of MoMA New York.
