The translation of the Belt's defining detail from leather to weather-resistant woven cord is a design decision that deserves attention. Nendo could have simplified the outdoor version by eliminating the belt detail altogether — a common approach in outdoor furniture design where complexity is typically reduced to improve weather resistance. Instead, the studio maintained the cinch detail as the primary design move, finding a material equivalent that performs the same visual and structural function in an exterior context.
High-tenacity woven cord — the material chosen for the outdoor belt — is a technical textile used in marine and architectural applications for its resistance to UV degradation, moisture absorption, and mechanical stress. Its application to a furniture detail of this scale and precision requires the same level of craftsmanship as the leather version: the cord must be drawn to consistent tension, the pattern must be maintained precisely, and the terminations must be finished with the same quality as the rest of the piece. The stainless steel frame and solid Teak feet complete a specification appropriate for the most demanding exterior environments.
