Marcio Kogan's Boteco Sideboard demonstrates the studio's characteristic interest in the precise management of material junctions. The recessed stone top — which sits within a frame of surrounding wood rather than flush with or above it — creates a material relationship of considerable complexity: the stone appears to be held within the wood, contained and defined by it, rather than simply resting on top of it. This reading of the stone as contained rather than supported changes the experiential quality of the material combination, making the stone appear more precious and the wood more structural than a conventional flush-top construction would achieve.
The choice between Marble and Volcanic Stone for the recessed top provides two distinct aesthetic registers. Marble — particularly the veined varieties associated with Italian luxury interiors — provides a surface of classical beauty and cultural resonance that connects the Boteco to the finest traditions of Italian furniture. Volcanic Stone — a raw, textured material of strong geological character — provides a more contemporary and materially assertive option that connects the Boteco to the natural material language of Kogan's Brazilian modernist reference. The Aluminum blade legs in Bronze finish provide a structural base element of lightness and precision that prevents the Boteco's considerable material mass from appearing heavy or static.
