Marcio Kogan's Brasilia Bed reflects the architect's deep engagement with the Brazilian Modernist tradition — a tradition in which the bed, like all furniture in the finest mid-century Brazilian residences, was designed as an integral element of the architectural composition of the room rather than as a freestanding object placed within it. The wrapping Palisander Santos headboard is the formal expression of this integration: it extends beyond the conventional rectangular headboard format to create a three-sided enclosure that defines the head zone of the bed as a distinct spatial experience within the room.
Palisander Santos — a Brazilian rosewood alternative of warm, richly figured character — is a material with strong cultural resonance in the Brazilian Modernist tradition. Its use in the Brasilia bed connects the piece to the furniture of the mid-century period, when Brazilian designers and architects used the country's extraordinary native hardwoods to create furniture of international distinction. The Brandy-finish aluminum feet provide a structural base element of lightness and precision that lifts the bed from the floor and contributes to the spatial reading of the Brasilia as a floating, sculptural form rather than a static, floor-bound mass.
