Michele De Lucchi for Artemide, 2003.

Castore takes its name from Castor, the twin star of Pollux in the Gemini constellation — and like its celestial namesake, it glows with a quiet constancy. Designed by Michele De Lucchi in 2003, the series presents a hand-blown glass sphere as its defining element: etched on the exterior to produce a polished-silk finish that reads as warm and luminous when lit, and as an almost sculptural object when off. The diffuser stem in white translucent polycarbonate creates a soft gradation between the bright globe and the darker structure above — a transition De Lucchi described as integral to the design’s identity.

Available as a pendant, table, and floor lamp in four diameters (14, 25, 35, and 42 cm), Castore adapts from intimate bedside contexts to generous dining or hospitality environments. The suspension versions feature stainless steel cable and a white thermoplastic ceiling canopy; table versions incorporate a touch dimmer in the die-cast metal base. All versions are UL listed.

About the Designer

Michele De Lucchi (born 1951, Ferrara) graduated from the Faculty of Architecture in Florence and was a central figure in the Alchimia and Memphis movements before returning to functional design in the late 1980s. His Tolomeo lamp for Artemide (1987, co-designed with Giancarlo Fassina) won the Compasso d’Oro and became one of the most commercially successful task lamps ever produced. Through his studio AMDL CIRCLE, De Lucchi continues work across architecture, product design, and scenography.
