Facce Wall

Designed by Herzog & de Meuron for Artemide, 2016.

Facce is the result of a collaboration with Swiss architectural practice Herzog & de Meuron — the studio behind the Tate Modern and the Beijing National Stadium. The result is a luminaire that is itself an architectural surface: a series of face-shaped steel panels, either raised or shallow in profile, mounted on an aluminium-covered steel support and finished in textured white or anthracite grey. Installed on walls or ceilings, they create indirect ambient light through overlapping, modular compositions.

Each panel can be combined with others in patterns that build texture across a surface — a wall of Facce becomes a relief, a living architectural skin that happens to emit light. Individual panels can be customized in different face configurations, making each installation unique. This is one of Artemide’s most conceptually ambitious designs: a lamp that thinks at the scale of architecture.

About the DesignersHerzog & de Meuron is a Basel-based architectural practice founded by Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron in 1978. Recipients of the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2001, they are among the most celebrated architects working today. Their Facce collaboration with Artemide applies the same rigour to luminaire design that defines their buildings.
