Designed by Jehs+Laub for COR Sitzmöbel — Germany
Jalis takes its name from an Arabic word for hospitality and relaxed gathering — and the sofa lives up to that etymology completely. Its form is deliberately reduced to the essence of cushioned comfort: loosely stacked volumes that recall the divan traditions of the Middle East, with decorative seams that accentuate the soft geometry in either tone-on-tone or contrasting colour. The individual elements can be used separately as chairs, combined as sofas, or extended into complete reclining landscapes. Jalis creates the impression that a few perfectly arranged cushions have simply settled into their most comfortable configuration.
Markus Jehs and Jürgen Laub established their Stuttgart-based studio in 1994 following design studies at the University of Schwäbisch Gmünd. Their partnership with COR has produced several of the brand’s most celebrated pieces, including the Mell armchair and the Elm sofa, all united by Jehs+Laub’s commitment to formal stringency, functional clarity, and imaginative material use. COR has been producing handcrafted upholstered furniture in Rheda-Wiedenbrück, Germany since 1954.
