Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret & Charlotte Perriand for Cassina — LC1 Sling Chair, 1928
The LC1, also known as the Fauteuil à dossier basculant (tilting-back armchair), was designed in 1928 for a villa in Ville d’Avray and shown publicly at the 1929 Salon d’Automne. Where the LC2 Grand Confort reads as monumental and enveloping, the LC1 is light, compact, and precise — a counterpoint that Le Corbusier himself described as “equipment for living.” The defining feature is the moveable backrest, attached to the tubular steel frame by a rod that allows the angle of tilt to change freely as the sitter shifts position. Seat and armrests are formed from saddle leather or hairy hide, each piece individually cut and hand-finished. The steel frame is available in polished chrome or matte black enamel.
In design terms, the LC1 is among the purest expressions of the Corbusier trio’s philosophy: industrial materials used with structural honesty, proportions derived from the Modulor, and comfort achieved through engineering rather than padding. The chair is part of the permanent design collection of MoMA, New York, and is produced exclusively by Cassina under worldwide licence from the Fondation Le Corbusier — each piece signed and numbered.
About the Designers: Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, and Charlotte Perriand collaborated on a body of furniture that remains foundational to modern design. Perriand, often underacknowledged in earlier decades, is now recognised as the primary driver of many of the trio’s most influential furniture innovations.

Le Corbusier (1887–1965), Pierre Jeanneret (1896–1967), and Charlotte Perriand (1903–1999) formed one of the most consequential design trios in history. Their LC furniture series — designed in 1928 for the Salon d'Automne in Paris — represented the first rigorous application of the machine aesthetic to the domestic interior. Produced by Cassina since 1965 under exclusive licence, the LC series remains among the most influential furniture designs ever created.
