Giancarlo Mattioli & Gruppo Architetti Urbanisti Città Nuova for Artemide, 1967.
The Nessino is the smaller companion to the legendary Nesso — one of the founding objects of Italian Pop design and a landmark in the industrial use of plastics. Designed in the mid-1960s by Giancarlo Mattioli together with the Gruppo Architetti Urbanisti Città Nuova, a collective of young Bologna-based architects, the Nessino brought injection-moulded polycarbonate into the domestic interior at a moment when plastic was still understood as a material of radical possibility. Its mushroom silhouette, a pure natural form translated into industrial production, became immediately iconic.
The Nesso and Nessino are held in the permanent design collections of MoMA New York and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among others. The current authorized re-edition maintains the original polycarbonate construction and is available in white, orange, red, black, blue, light blue, yellow, lavender, and green. Four E14 lamp holders accommodate up to 5W LED each for soft, diffused all-directional light. The Nessino is most often used as a bedside or accent table lamp; it pairs naturally with the larger Nesso for a coordinated installation.
