O Ground

The ‘O’ Ground is the product of an unusual brief: design a light that gives as little as possible to the urban environment while giving everything to the people within it. Chilean architect Alejandro Aravena — Pritzker Prize laureate and director of ELEMENTAL — designed O as an act of considered restraint. A perfect ring of LED light sits flush with or just above the ground plane, outlining a circle of illumination without drawing attention to the fixture itself. In natural spaces, it disappears. In urban settings, it punctuates the ground with a halo that respects rather than competes with its surroundings.

The ‘O’ Ground is cast in robust materials for permanent exterior installation, IP67 rated, and designed to function over long service cycles with minimal maintenance. It is Artemide’s most conceptually rigorous outdoor design — a lamp that succeeds by refusing to assert itself.

About the DesignerAlejandro Aravena is the founder of ELEMENTAL in Santiago, Chile, and recipient of the 2016 Pritzker Architecture Prize. His practice is known for socially engaged architecture and a commitment to design that serves the broadest possible public. His collaboration with Artemide on ‘O’ reflects that same philosophy applied to the scale of a luminaire.
