Verner Panton for Louis Poulsen, 1971.
The Panthella was designed by Verner Panton in 1971 as one of the most complete expressions of his design philosophy — organic form, singular material, total visual unity. The original floor lamp presented a mushroom silhouette of almost comic exuberance: a large acrylic globe on a curved stem, the two forms merging seamlessly without joints or seams. The Panthella 250 is the table version of that original, scaled to a more intimate format that retains every proportional quality of the floor lamp in a bedside or desktop context.
The diffuser is mouth-blown opal glass, giving it a translucency and warmth that plastic alternatives cannot replicate. The stem and base are steel with a metallic finish. The current version incorporates a dimmable LED source for energy efficiency without compromising the quality of the diffused light. Available in a wide range of finishes including white, chrome, brass, rose, and various matte colours. The Panthella 250 is compact enough for a nightstand but visually assertive enough to function as the primary decorative object in a room.
About the Designer
Verner Panton (1926–1998) was a Danish designer of radical imagination who rejected the rectilinear conventions of Scandinavian modernism in favour of flowing, biomorphic forms and saturated colour. His Panton Chair (1960) was the first single-material, single-form injection-moulded plastic chair. He remains one of the most influential figures in 20th-century furniture and product design.
