Poul Henningsen for Louis Poulsen, 1958.
The PH 5 Floor brings Henningsen’s iconic five-shade system to a floor-standing format, making it one of the most refined and architecturally considered floor lamps in the Louis Poulsen catalogue. Like the pendant version, it deploys a calculated arrangement of five shades on a logarithmic spiral to eliminate the light source from view at all angles below the horizontal — producing a warm, shadow-free pool of illumination without glare. The floor version adds a weighted base and adjustable stem that allows the shade assembly to be positioned precisely over a reading chair, sofa, or work surface.
The PH 5 Floor is available in white and a range of metallic and lacquered finishes. The stem is steel; the shades are spun aluminum. The small red inner shade and blue auxiliary shade correct colour temperature, adding warmth to the emitted light. The current version is LED-equipped. In a living room or reading corner, the PH 5 Floor provides both the function of a task lamp and the visual presence of a sculptural object.
About the Designer
Poul Henningsen (1894–1967) was a Danish author, critic, architect, and designer. His 1924 collaboration with Louis Poulsen — beginning with the Paris Lamp — established a systematic approach to glare-free lighting that transformed the industry. His influence on Scandinavian design is comparable in scope to that of Arne Jacobsen in furniture.

Poul Henningsen (1894–1967) was a Danish architect, author, and designer, and the most significant figure in Scandinavian lighting design. His PH (Poul Henningsen) lamp system, developed in the 1920s, was the first designed specifically to eliminate glare and diffuse light evenly in all directions without a visible light source. The PH 5, Artichoke, and AJ lamps remain the most celebrated designs in Danish design history.
