The Solid Side Table's design proposition is almost defiantly simple: take a block of solid wood, finish it with precision and care, and allow the material to speak for itself. This material-first approach is a direct counter to the tendency in contemporary luxury furniture design to prioritize formal complexity and technological novelty over the inherent quality of natural materials. The Solid's design confidence lies in its willingness to present wood in its most unmediated form — as a mass, rather than as a veneer, a frame, or a structural element serving a more complex design agenda.
The 'Burned' finish deserves particular attention. Shou Sugi Ban — the Japanese tradition of charring wood surfaces to improve their weather resistance and reveal their grain structure — has been adapted in the Solid's 'Burned' finish to create a surface of extraordinary visual depth. The carbonized outer layer, once brushed to reveal the grain structure beneath, creates a surface in which the distinction between dark valleys (representing the soft wood fibers between the growth rings, which char more deeply) and lighter ridges (representing the dense growth rings, which resist charring) is dramatically intensified. The result is a wood grain that appears to glow from within, providing a visual warmth that is entirely different from that of conventionally stained wood.
