The Spencer Sofa's most distinctive quality is its seat depth — a dimension that determines the degree to which a sofa invites genuine lounging as opposed to formal, upright seating. At the generous depths characteristic of the Spencer's modules, the sitter is encouraged to adopt a more reclined posture, with legs extended onto the seat surface and back supported at a lower angle than the conventional upright dining or working posture. The channeled goose down padding — in which the down fill is constrained within parallel channels sewn through the cushion cover — provides a consistent, even distribution of fill across the cushion surface that prevents the lumping and displacement that affects non-channeled down cushions under extended use. The channels also contribute to the cushion's visual quality, creating a surface texture of parallel lines that reads as finished and intentional rather than simply as a filled upholstery cover.
