Designed by Michele De Lucchi & Giancarlo Fassina for Artemide, 1987. Winner of the Compasso d’Oro 1989.
The Tolomeo Mini Table is the most intimate member of Artemide’s most celebrated family — a compact, perfectly proportioned task lamp that distills the engineering poetry of the original into a form suited to smaller desks, bedside tables, and shelves. Its self-tensioning system of steel cables holds the polished aluminium arms in balance without a spring in sight, allowing repositioning with a single fingertip and holding position with total precision.
The Mini shares every structural principle with the full-sized Tolomeo: die-cast aluminium joints, extruded aluminium arms, and a rotating shade that directs light exactly where needed. In the Mini, these elements are scaled down to create a lamp that reads as a miniature of an icon — but it is its own object, with its own presence. Available with a weighted base or clamp mount.
About the DesignersMichele De Lucchi trained at the University of Florence and was a founding member of the Memphis Group before heading design at Olivetti, later founding AMDL CIRCLE. Giancarlo Fassina contributed rigorous mechanical engineering to the collaboration. The Tolomeo has been in continuous production since 1987 and is part of the permanent collection of MoMA New York.
