Designed by Michele De Lucchi & Giancarlo Fassina for Artemide, 1987. Winner of the Compasso d’Oro 1989.
The Tolomeo Table is one of the most iconic task lamps ever made — a design so perfectly resolved that it has remained unchanged for nearly four decades. Its self-tensioning system of steel cables holds the polished aluminium arms in balance without a single visible spring, allowing the lamp to be repositioned with a single fingertip and to stay precisely where placed. The shade, also in polished aluminium, can be rotated 360° to direct light exactly as needed. This is functional design at its most refined: every element serves a purpose, and nothing is superfluous.
Made in Italy using die-cast and extruded aluminium, the Tolomeo Table accepts a standard E26 bulb and has been updated to accommodate LED sources. Available with either a clamp or a weighted base. Since 1987 it has been in continuous production — a permanent fixture in design collections worldwide and part of the permanent collection at MoMA New York.
About the DesignersMichele De Lucchi trained at the University of Florence and was a founding member of the Memphis Group before heading design at Olivetti, later founding AMDL CIRCLE. Giancarlo Fassina brought rigorous engineering discipline to the collaboration. Together they created a lamp that resolves every mechanical and aesthetic challenge in a single, elegant system.
