Ingo Maurer (1932–2019), known as the Poet of Light, was a German designer whose work transformed lighting from functional object to emotional art. Born on Reichenau Island, he trained as a typographer before founding Design M (later Ingo Maurer GmbH) in Munich in 1963. His iconic Bulb lamp (1966) entered MoMA's permanent collection, and his subsequent career produced an extraordinary body of work — Lucellino, Zettel'z, Porca Miseria!, and YaYaHo — that consistently blended poetry, humour, and technical innovation. He died in Munich in 2019 at the age of 87.
