AJ Wall

Designed by Arne Jacobsen for Louis Poulsen, 1957.

The AJ Wall lamp was created by Arne Jacobsen for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen — a commission that required him to design every element of the building, from the structure down to the ashtrays. The AJ lamp family was part of that total design vision, and it remains one of the most resolved lighting objects of the twentieth century: a tapered shade of spun aluminium on a slim wall bracket, angled to direct light precisely downward while a narrow top opening emits a soft ambient glow.

The shade angle is adjustable, allowing the lamp to be optimized for reading or for general ambient light. The inner surface is painted white to ensure the characteristic soft, glare-free quality that defines all AJ luminaires. Seventy years after its creation, it still looks correct on virtually any wall — contemporary or traditional, residential or commercial.

About the DesignerArne Jacobsen (1902–1971) was Denmark’s most internationally celebrated architect and designer. His work — including the Egg Chair, the Swan Chair, and the SAS Royal Hotel — defined a particular strain of Danish modernism that was rigorous in its functionalism and precise in its craft. His lighting designs for Louis Poulsen share all these qualities.
