Infinity

Infinity’s idea works by subtraction: pare the container down to almost nothing so that whatever is placed inside it does the talking. Rather than a fixed bookcase shape, Flexform built it as a modular system of separate containers that stack freely and join to each other with a connector screw hidden from view, which is what lets a single set of modules grow into a great many different compositions of solid and open space rather than one settled arrangement.

Each container is built in epoxy powder-coated metal, and a version with a backpainted glass panel is also offered, enameled to match the metal finish. The modules are joined using a satin-finish steel connector screw designed to stay invisible once the piece is assembled, keeping the joints from interrupting the read of stacked volumes. Flexform also makes a companion cowhide-covered box for the system, fitted with a side slit handle so it lifts out easily, pairing the warmth of leather against the plain sheet metal of the containers themselves.

As a bookcase system, Infinity suits a living room or study that wants storage able to grow with the collection inside it rather than a bookcase sized once and left alone. Because the whole point is the interplay between filled and empty modules, designers should plan roughly how many containers the wall will hold and where the glass-fronted ones sit before the stack goes up, since that composition is the piece’s real design decision.
