Oh Mei Ma

Oh Mei Ma is built from six sheets of gilded paper, hung so they read like sails from an unseen structure above, with a plexiglass weight anchoring the bottom of the piece rather than a visible base. The light does not aim outward at the sails directly: an LED source points down onto a reflector plate set into that counterweight, and the light bounces back up to strike the gold surfaces from below, which is what gives the fixture its glow rather than any single visible bulb.

Each set of sails is gold plated by hand by craftsmen in Munich, a process completed to order rather than in bulk production. A second LED uplight tints the ceiling above the piece a soft blue, a contrast meant to set off the warm tone of the gold reflections below it. The sails are tensioned down to the ceiling canopy with ropes rather than fixed onto a rigid frame.

Because the fixture is built to give lift to tall rooms in particular, Oh Mei Ma suits a stairwell, an entrance hall, or another double height space where there is enough vertical room for the sails to hang and for the reflected light to read from below. Because each set is made to order, it is a piece to plan for ahead of a room’s completion rather than one to source at the last minute.
