Rays

Rays is built around one idea taken to its limit: thinness. The top is reduced to the minimum thickness the material allows, and the base supporting it is just as slender, so the table has almost no visual weight even though it is doing real structural work. The top itself comes in an irregular or rounded organic outline rather than a plain circle, and a radiused base made from a bundle of metal rods that rise and fold upward carries it, in marble or in wood.

The marble tops, in Zebrino or Stone Grey, are beveled at 20 mm thick, thin enough that the stone reads as a plane rather than a slab, while the wood version is a slightly thicker 25 mm contoured MDF finished in a brushed oak veneer with an open-pore Moka lacquer. The base is formed from round metal rods, varnished in a polished Pewter colour, arranged like spokes and welded together at the centre, and it stands on protective, soft, non-scratch rubber slides that keep the thin profile from marking the floor.

Because the base and top are both so slender, Rays works best where the floor itself is meant to remain visible, sitting into a rug rather than covering it, which makes it a good match for a soft-textured rug beneath a sofa or a pair of lounge chairs. The marble tops bring colour and pattern into an otherwise quiet base, while the oak top keeps the whole table in one warm material family for a room built around wood tones. Its different heights let it work equally as a low coffee table or as a taller side table beside a chair, so the choice comes down to where it needs to sit rather than how it looks.
