Lou

Lou is designed to be seen in numbers rather than as a single table. Minotti make the coffee table in a range of sizes and finishes specifically so that several can be placed near one another, and grouped that way they read less like identical objects and more like a small landscape of low forms across the room. That decision, to make variety part of the design, is what lets one table do the work of an entire cluster.

The construction is where the table earns its complexity. A contoured core in MDF is sheathed in larch veneered plywood and then milled along its curved edges, a process that borrows as much from cabinetmaking as from any factory technique, and the larch base is finished in a dark Licorice-coloured lacquer. Onto that base sits a flush-set top chosen to contrast with the wood underneath it: a top in Calacatta marble brings the cool, veined class of natural stone, while a top in pate de verre glass brings a different kind of depth and reflection, and either way the point is the pairing of a wood base with a stone or glass top.

Grouped in twos or threes in a living room, Lou tables in different sizes let a seating area hold surface space without one large, dominant coffee table doing all the work, with varying heights meaning each table can carry something different, a tray on one, books on another. Because the wood base and the stone or glass top are always chosen as a contrasting pair, a designer bringing in several sizes should decide up front whether the marble or the glass top should carry the visual weight, since both keep the same larch base beneath them.
