The PH 5 is one of the most recognizable pendants in modern lighting, and the fixture that most directly embodies Poul Henningsen’s lifelong study of how light behaves. Designed in 1958, the PH 5 introduced a solution to a problem Henningsen had been working on since the 1920s: how to deliver fully glare-free light regardless of the bulb inside.
The fixture uses three concentric aluminum shades arranged so that every point of the light source is hidden from direct view. Light is redirected downward onto the table or work surface and outward into the room, while a sandblasted glass diffuser beneath the shades softens the transition. The result is an illuminated object that seems to emit a quiet, balanced glow from its entire surface.
Nearly seventy years after its release, the PH 5 remains in continuous production at Louis Poulsen in Copenhagen. It appears in design museums, period residential interiors, and contemporary architectural projects alike, proof that a well-solved optical problem does not age.

The PH 5 is produced in 23 active finishes across three pricing tiers. The standard range covers Classic White, Monochrome editions in Pale Blue, Pale Rose, Blue, Hues of Green, Hues of Grey, and Hues of Red, plus saturated colours including Yellow, Green, and Dark Blue. The Brass and Copper editions use untreated metallic shades that develop a natural patina over time. The Black edition, released in 2025, features anodized aluminum shades and is produced in a limited run.

Poul Henningsen (1894 to 1967) was a Danish designer, architect, and critic whose seven-decade collaboration with Louis Poulsen defined modern Scandinavian lighting. His central conviction was that electric light, unlike gas or candlelight, could not be used raw. It needed to be shaped.
Across the PH series Henningsen developed a logarithmic shade geometry that hides the bulb from every viewing angle while producing a soft, distributed light. The PH 5 is the most widely recognized result of that work. Louis Poulsen has continued to manufacture the original designs without modification, and has released new finish editions in close collaboration with Henningsen's surviving family and design estate.
