Multi-Lite Pendant

The Multi-Lite pendant is built around a single mechanism: two shades, positioned opposite each other, that rotate independently around the light source rather than staying fixed in one position. That independence is the whole idea, since it turns one fitting into several different light fittings depending on how the two shades are set.

The pendant is built from two cylindrical shade forms, held together by a metal ring that encompasses the fitting and anchors each of the two quarter spherical shades to the frame. Because each shade turns on its own, they can be set so light is thrown upward, downward, or unevenly to one side, changing both how bright the room reads and where the light actually falls. It was first drawn in 1972, a departure at the time from a design habit built on repeating identical elements across a piece.

Because the light pattern changes with how the shades are turned, the Multi-Lite works as a pendant a household can adjust room by room, whether it hangs low over a dining table for a more directed pool of light or higher in a living space for a softer, more even spread.
