Dibbets Rug

Dibbets starts from a fibre choice rather than a pattern: Lyocell, made from cellulose, behaves differently under light than wool or synthetic yarn usually does. Minotti chose a manual tufting method to get the softest possible feel from that fibre, the opposite instinct to a machine-made rug built for uniformity, and the same method is what lets Dibbets be produced to a client’s own measurements.

The construction explains the reflective quality: a 16 mm surface of shorn Lyocell throws back bright, almost iridescent highlights that a shorter or denser pile would not produce. An upper layer of polyester sits over a lower backing treated in a natural, antiallergenic latex. Because it is handcrafted, a finished rug’s size can vary by a few centimetres from what was ordered, even on a custom piece, a normal tolerance for tufting rather than a fault.

Because it can be ordered to measure rather than only in fixed sizes, Dibbets suits a living room or formal dining room where the rug needs to work with a specific furniture layout. The soft, reflective surface reads best under low, warm lighting, where the iridescent quality of the shorn Lyocell shows rather than washing out. For a custom size, Minotti asks for a scaled drawing with full dimensions, reviewed by their own technical office before production, so a tight room dimension should have that review built into the schedule.
