Superquadra Storage

Superquadra is a family of storage units built around one visual decision: every piece should look as though it floats. Whether it is the dining sideboard, the living and TV unit or the glass-fronted cabinet, the body is lifted clear of the floor so a large volume reads as airy and suspended.

The materials carry that argument. The dining and living units rest on a solid wood base with feet in a polished Brandy finish, and on the dining sideboard an aluminium foot juts out beyond the line of the base. Structures come in stained palisander Santos or black lacquered open-pore ash. The dining version has four drawers, the top one fitted with a cutlery holder in black saddle-hide, while the living unit pairs two drawers with a surface of thin Canaletto walnut staves that let light pass between them. The cabinet is the most layered: laminated glass doors with copper coloured metal mesh inside, a bronzed mirror back and light strips along both sides of the frame.

In a dining room the sideboard gives serving and cutlery storage beside the table, and in a living room the TV unit holds media while its staved surface keeps a long piece from looking heavy. The cabinet suits a dining room, study or bar area where objects are meant to be glimpsed rather than fully displayed, and two placed side by side make a wider storage wall. Designers should plan a wall socket for the cabinet lights, and note that the walnut slats can shift slightly in alignment and spacing with temperature and humidity.
