Amsterdam’s design idea is in its doors: vertical slats of varying sizes alternate between two finishes, giving the front of the piece a rhythm of light and dark not unlike the keys of a piano. Steel feet, formed from curved plates, add a further contrast of light and shadow underneath the cabinet and soften what would otherwise be a run of rigid geometry across the piece.

The structure is built in a lacquered wood finish, brushed by hand in a process that leaves each piece with its own slight variation in tone. The doors carry burnt oak inserts that project outward from the surface, adding depth to the alternating pattern of slats, and the top is a bronze mirrored glass. Feet are an embossed lacquered steel, and the interior shelves are clear glass, with an internal drawer available inside each door as an option.

Amsterdam suits a dining room or living space that needs enclosed storage with some presence of its own, and the piece is built with two, three, or four doors, so the same design can be sized to a narrower wall or a longer run depending on the room. Designers should decide on the door count early, since it sets the overall width of the piece against the rest of the room.
