Eclipse Ellipse

Eclipse Ellipse works by projecting shadow as much as light: turning it on throws a composition of one ellipse and several circles onto the wall around the fixture itself, and the exact pattern is not fixed by the maker but set by whoever installs it.

Steel and aluminium make up the body, built as a large disc paired with a smaller one, 60 cm across at its widest point. The angle of the large disc and the position of the smaller one can both be adjusted, which is what lets the projected pattern change from one installation to the next, and the light itself reads as indirect rather than a beam aimed at anything in particular. The light source inside is not one a resident can swap out themselves; it needs an electrician to replace it.

Because the projected pattern is the point of the fixture rather than a side effect, Eclipse Ellipse works as an accent on a hallway or living room wall rather than as a room’s main light source, pairing artistic expression with usable indirect light in one wall mounted piece. Since the light source itself cannot be swapped by hand, it is worth planning access to an electrician into any maintenance plan for the piece.
