Elliot Coffee Table

Elliot treats the coffee table as a small, decorative object first and a useful surface second, closer to jewelry than conventional occasional furniture. It borrows a mid twentieth century Milanese sensibility, where a functional object was also meant to be looked at, and applies that across a genuinely wide range of material combinations rather than one fixed look.

The construction underlines the jewelry idea: an external metal frame joins an internal wood or lacquered structure, so the top sits set flush within the frame the way a stone sits within a ring rather than resting on top. Marble tops such as a deep, veined Rosso Levanto give real weight and colour, while an open-pore lacquered oak or ash top reads quieter with wood furniture nearby. Several smaller tables also carry an internal compartment, turning a decorative object into a place to keep magazines close at hand.

Because Elliot comes in several sizes and structures, some open on one or two sides and some fully closed, it works best grouped: two or three at different heights beside a sofa read as a considered set rather than a single accent. Its decorative character suits a living room corner or a spot beside a lounge chair, and the range of marble and wood tops lets it match a stone-heavy room or a warmer, wood-panelled one. Designers should treat the compartment version as practical and the closed version as the more purely decorative one.
