Groundpiece Sofa

Groundpiece set out to change what a sofa is, and the change is proportional: a deconstructed line that is low and deep instead of upright, built around a more relaxed and casual way of sitting. That same shift in thinking reaches the armrest, which Flexform redesigned entirely. It can be padded and upholstered like the rest of the sofa, or built as a cowhide-clad metal console that doubles as a flat surface for accessories and carries shelves for holding objects, an answer to the fact that people now use a sofa to watch television, read, work, and even eat, not only to sit.

The frame combines metal with molded polyurethane padding and solid wood elements padded the same way, both covered in a protective laminated fabric before the visible upholstery is applied. Seat cushions are filled with sterilized, gold-label-certified goose down over a crushproof insert, with a premium down option and a Dacron alternative for a firmer feel, while the back cushions carry goose down with an optional support bolster. The console-style armrest itself is clad in cowhide, and the base beneath everything is finished in epoxy powder-coated metal.

The low, deep proportions and the console-style armrest suit a living room built around lounging and informal use, where a guest is as likely to work from a laptop or eat from a tray as sit upright. Designers should decide early between the padded armrest and the cowhide console, since that choice determines whether the sofa also works as a side surface for the room, and whether the seating leans toward goose down softness or the firmer Dacron fill.
