Hortensia’s whole design comes from a single decision: build the upholstery itself out of many small, individually shaped pieces rather than stretching one panel of fabric over a padded shell. The armchair’s rounded, voluminous shape and its covering are the same act, since the curves of the chair are formed by the layered petals rather than by a separate structural padding underneath a flat cover.

That covering is built from more than 30,000 individually laser cut petals attached across the chair’s surface, a construction method that is closer to assembling many small pieces than upholstering one continuous shape. The petals themselves can be specified in fabric or in leather, so the same layered technique carries across either material rather than being limited to one covering type.

As a single armchair, Hortensia works best as a deliberate focal point rather than one seat among several matching pieces, which suits a living room reading corner or a lounge area built around one strong shape rather than a full seating group. Because the surface is made up of many individual petals rather than one smooth panel, the chair reads differently depending on the angle it is viewed from, which designers should account for when deciding where in a room it will be seen most often.
