Hubble Bubble

Hubble Bubble takes a single suspension lamp and turns it into a cluster: rather than one shade, the fixture is built from a group of glass LED bubbles that can be arranged to hang horizontally, vertically, or anywhere in between, so the same fixture reads as a loose, informal cloud of light rather than a fixed shade shape.

The frame is metal, carrying polycarbonate light guides that direct light into the glass bulbs themselves, and it comes in two sizes built around either seven or eleven bubbles. The bubbles come in two glass finishes, one with an iridescent, oil like surface that catches a metallic glint, and one frosted, which softens the same light into a more diffused glow. Power reaches the bubbles through a coating of conductive layers built into the frame, so the individual bubbles do not need separate wiring run out to each one.

Because it can hang from any angle, Hubble Bubble suits a stairwell or an entry hall where a straight vertical drop is not always possible, as well as a dining room or living room where a looser, more horizontal cluster of bubbles reads as a single light feature over a table or a seating group. Designers should choose between the seven and eleven bubble versions based on the scale of the room, since the larger count reads as a fuller cluster in a room with more open ceiling space around it.
