Tape Dining

Tape Dining takes a family of lounge seats and brings it to the table. The decision was to keep the recognisable line of the original seats while slightly increasing the thicknesses, so a smaller chair built for dining still carries the visual comfort of the larger ones. A single curved shell wraps around to form the armrest and holds a softly shaped lumbar cushion, which gives the diner support at the lower back through a long meal.

The engineering is mostly hidden. The backrest has an aluminium insert coated in fire-resistant polyurethane foam, the seat is wood with variable-density foam, and both are wrapped in breathable heat-bonded fibre laminated to hypoallergenic cotton for added softness. Underneath, a tubular metal base in Black Coffee with a glossy anti-fingerprint finish rests on chrome feet and swivels through 360 degrees with return, bringing the chair back to its position when someone stands up.

The compact proportions suit a residential dining room where a larger armchair would crowd the table, and the swivel makes sitting down and getting up easier. Minotti position Tape for hospitality as well, and restaurants, hotel dining rooms and private dining spaces gain from the return movement, which keeps a room looking orderly between guests. Because the upholstery is completely removable in both fabric and leather, covers can be cleaned or replaced, a practical point for any high-use setting. Designers should confirm clearance for the armrests under the table and allow room for the swivel.
