Wedge Coffee Table

Wedge is built on a graphic idea: legs that look as though they have been driven through the table from above. Each support is a bulky semi-circular volume ending in an oblique chisel tip, so at floor level it narrows as if the table were standing on tiptoe. The same gesture shows on the top, where the semi-circles of the supports appear in the surface, so the structure is read from above as well as from the side, which matters on a coffee table that is mostly seen looking down.

The top material decides how that detail reads. In laminated, tempered and bevelled glass, Smoked Grey or Bronzed beneath an extra-clear upper sheet, the legs are visible through the surface and the construction is on show; the glass is drilled so mounting plates can fix it to the legs. In Louro Faia veneer with a hammered texture and open-pore Moka lacquer, the legs appear to perforate the wood while staying level with it, a more solid and tactile reading. The supports come in polished stainless steel or a satin stainless steel finish.

Offered in round, square and rectangular formats at coffee table height, Wedge suits a living room where a large seating group needs one generous centre rather than several small tables. The glass versions let more of the floor show through and suit lighter rooms, while the wood top gives a warmer, heavier plane in a larger space. Designers should note that Wedge also exists as a dining table, which allows a coordinated dining and living scheme in the same project.
