Luce d’Oro grew out of a simple question about the colour of light itself, specifically the warm cast of sunlight and firelight, and how a lined disc could hold that warmth. Catellani & Smith note that the idea of refraction that began here was carried into later creations.

The base and stand are built from rough iron finished with a wax coat rather than a polished lacquer, supporting a single aluminium disc at the top. The underside of the disc is lined in a metallic leaf that reflects the warm tone of the light source back down into the room, and the stand’s height adjusts, so the disc can be raised or lowered to sit over a chair, a console, or an empty corner.

As a floor lamp, Luce d’Oro works as a reading light beside a chair or as ambient light in a corner of a living room, and because the stand height adjusts, it can be set to clear a piece of furniture placed directly beneath the disc. Designers should treat the disc’s warm reflected light as the room’s accent light rather than its main source.
