Seymour Seating System

Seymour sets out to keep the formal precision of a rigorously built system while still allowing curved lines, using a one-piece seat cushion matched to seat backs in two heights that fold into three-dimensional curves. That combination lets the same system build a simple fixed sofa or a full sectional, in either a rounded or a straighter, more classical layout.

The seat sits on a multi-ply wood frame with elastic-strap suspension, its foam shaped with a concave contour so the cushion settles rather than sits on top. Armrests and backrests use a flame-resistant foam over a metal core, wrapped in a breathable, heat-bonded casing. Seat cushions are fully reversible and, with the backrest cushions, filled with sectioned goose down over a support-foam core, letting the curved backs keep their shape through daily use. Every cover, in fabric or leather, comes off without dismantling the base. The base is a run of painted aluminium bars along each piece, lifting the composition so its proportions read as lighter from the front.

Curved elements suit a living room built around conversation, where two Seymour sofas facing one another become the main gathering point of the room, while straighter sectional compositions suit a more conventional arrangement against a wall or corner. Because the system produces both a rounded and a linear result, it works equally well in a curved or a more classically proportioned space. Designers composing a curved layout should plan the two backrest heights together, since the curve depends on how they are paired across a run.
