Morgan Dining Table

Morgan starts from the traditional refectory table and asks what it becomes when its proportions and materials are reconsidered for a contemporary room. The long, communal character is kept, but the weight is concentrated in a few strong supports, and the top is given a distinctive flared edge. It comes in rectangular and round versions, the round one carried on three supports, and Minotti design it to accept custom-sized tops.

The supports are where the argument sits. Each has a tapered, diamond-shaped section that gives the base its vigour, built from MDF panels sheathed in laser-cut metal sheets that are bent, welded and then electroplated in a Bronze satin finish. Electroplating gives the surface hardness and resistance to rust and corrosion, and because the satin finish is applied by hand, each support can show slightly different nuances. The top, 40 mm thick, rests on chrome cylinders and is offered in flamed oak, glossy lacquer or, on round tops, matt ebony.

In a residential dining room, the rectangular Morgan suits a long room where the table is the main event, while the round version suits a squarer room where conversation across the table matters. In hospitality, it anchors a private dining room or a hotel restaurant. Designers should check chair positions against the supports, since the diamond legs have real presence, and tell clients that variation in the bronze finish is the mark of handwork, not a fault.
