Papilio takes its name, and its idea, from a butterfly’s wings: the back splits into two curved wings that let a sitter lean sideways against one of them for a more informal, relaxed posture, while sitting upright and centred keeps the same chair working in a formal dining setting. The same shell, offered as a chair or as a stool in two heights, is built to hold both uses rather than needing a separate model for each.

The shell is a thermoplastic material, kept to a constant thickness so the sinuous upper part of the seat can merge cleanly into the light tubular steel legs beneath it. It is padded with flexible cold shaped polyurethane foam under a polyester fibre cover, then finished in fabric or leather, and the cover unzips completely using a metal zipper set into the back, a functional and visible detail that runs through the whole line carrying the Papilio name.

Because the same shell reads as formal or informal depending on how it is used, Papilio suits a dining room that also doubles as a more relaxed everyday space, and the stool version carries the same idea to a kitchen island or a breakfast bar.
