Tufty-Time Sofa

Tufty-Time’s design decision is to carry the tufted, button-backed sofa tradition, the capitonne and Chesterfield styles, into a system built from separate modular pieces instead of one fixed shape. The range starts from a single ottoman as its basic unit, then adds central, corner and terminal pieces in a low or a high armrest, so the same parts build a straight sofa, a sofa with a chaise longue, a corner sofa, or an arrangement that can be approached from more than one side.

The frame is tubular steel and steel profiles, cushioned in flexible cold shaped polyurethane foam under a polyester fibre cover, which is what gives the range its noticeably deep seat. The back cushion is filled with down feather and polyester fibre in a pillow style construction, soft against the tufted backrest rather than firm, and the feet are a thermoplastic material rather than metal or wood. Every cover, in fabric or in leather, comes off completely, which matters on a design built around a deep upholstered surface that will need cleaning over time.

Because the modular pieces reconfigure into so many shapes, Tufty-Time works as a compact two-seater in a smaller den just as well as it does built out into a full corner arrangement or a larger island shape for a bigger living room. Its removable covers make it a practical choice wherever the sofa will see heavy daily use, and a designer combining several pieces from the range should settle the mix of high and low armrests before ordering, since that choice changes how enclosed each seating position feels.
