Charles Sofa’s identity rests on a small number of visible parts: a foot in die cast aluminium shaped like an inverted L, a single seat cushion rather than several smaller ones, and back cushions left loose instead of fixed in place. Reducing the sofa to those few elements gives it a light, simple profile that, almost by contrast, opens up a wide range of layouts built from the same parts: an in line two or three seat sofa, a sofa with a chaise longue, or a corner sofa.
The seat cushion is shaped polyurethane of varying density, finished with sterilized down for home use or with polyester fibre for public spaces, while the back cushions use a box style construction in polyester fibre with a cotton cover, left free rather than fixed to the frame. The frame beneath is tubular steel and steel profiles, upholstered in flexible cold shaped polyurethane foam, and the whole cover comes in fabric or in leather. The feet stand 19 cm off the ground, enough for the sofa to read as raised rather than sitting directly on the floor.
Because the same small set of parts reconfigures into a straight sofa, a chaise arrangement or a corner sofa, Charles suits a living room where the seating plan may need to change over time, or a larger space built from more than one Charles element joined together. The choice between the home and the public spaces seat cushion fill is worth deciding early with a designer, since B&B Italia specifies that fill differently for a residence than for a space with heavier daily use.
