Mart Lounge Chair

Mart works from a single hollow shape, built in two sizes, then set on a choice of bases that changes the chair’s whole character without changing the seat itself. The shell grows out of a specific production method: a plastic shell is set inside a mould and polyurethane is foamed cold around it, a thermoformed leather technique developed to give the chair its particular elasticity and comfort.

The shell itself is glass fibre, and depending on the cover chosen, either thick leather or leather laid over flexible cold shaped polyurethane foam, or an upholstered version padded with shaped polyurethane and polyester fibre before the fabric cover goes on. The swivel base comes as a cross shaped frame in steel laminate and aluminium extrusions, or as a support frame in tubular steel, or as a swivel frame combining steel profiles with solid wood, three distinct readings of the same seat. An optional headrest, padded in polyester fibre with a cotton cover, is counterweighted with anodized aluminium and steel so it holds its position rather than falling back.

Because the base changes the chair’s character so completely, Mart works as a relaxed reading chair in a living room when set on the wood and steel swivel frame, or as a more formal lounge chair in a study or a den on the cross shaped metal base. The optional headrest is worth specifying wherever the chair will be used for longer periods of sitting, since it is a distinct part rather than a fixed feature of the shell.
