Spencer’s bed shares its name and its underlying idea with the seating system of the same name: soft, sinuous lines that treat comfort and appearance as the same problem. The frame is built with no sharp corners, and the headboard is conceived as a soft shell, thickened by a plush quilt, so the bed reads as enveloping rather than architectural.

The frame and one-piece headboard are built in multiply wood, joined with metal brackets for straightforward assembly, and padded throughout with a variable-density resilient polyurethane foam. A layer of fiber thermally bound to white cotton cloth separates the padding from the fabric, keeping the upholstery soft. The fabric upholstery is completely removable; the leather is not removable on the headboard itself, though the leather covers on the bed frame and headboard cushion can be taken off. The bed stands on die-cast aluminum feet in a glossy Pewter finish, angled back from the edges of the bed so a person can walk around it without catching a foot on the underside.

The headboard’s shape is built to support reading in bed, which makes Spencer a natural fit for a primary bedroom where the bed doubles as a place to sit up and read. Because the bed is designed to take any fabric or leather from the Minotti collection, it adapts easily to a bedroom scheme built around a different piece of furniture. The slatted base height is adjustable, so designers should confirm the base position against the mattress being specified before the bed is ordered.
