Canasta ’13

Canasta ’13 keeps the identifiable shape of the earlier Canasta series while changing the surface, replacing it with a light interlacing of mélange polyethylene yarn that lets daylight pass through the frames rather than blocking it. The most distinct piece is an oversized circular sofa, built with a 360° swivel base so the seat can be turned to face a different direction, with a foldable hood that cuts sunlight passing through by up to 92% when needed.

The frame beneath the woven surface is aluminium or steel with a polyester powder coating for outdoor exposure, the interlacing worked in polyethylene fibre. Seat cushions are shaped polyurethane wrapped in a water repellent polyester fibre cover, with a heat sealed ribbon closing the largest cushions. On the circular sofa, the canopy frame is glass fibre, its mechanism electro polished steel and anodized aluminium, covered in Balivo fabric. A waterproof cloth cover protects the piece between uses.

Outdoors, Canasta ’13 suits a terrace or poolside area built around one central piece rather than a wall of matching sofas, since the circular swivel sofa works best as a freestanding anchor with room to rotate around it. Where the foldable hood is specified, designers should leave enough overhead clearance for it to open fully.
