Formiche takes its name from the Italian word for ants, and the idea follows the name: small tables meant to be grouped in clusters the way ants gather, rather than used as a single fixed side table. The slender support frame picks up the same foot detailing found on one of B&B Italia’s sofa systems, letting these small tables sit convincingly beside upholstered seating. The tops come in round, oval, and a kidney bean shape, combined at different heights to build up a support system.
Each rounded support is painted steel, connected by a crosspiece that lets several supports carry more than one top at varying heights, and the tops are finished in a thin profile, only 8 mm thick, in either glass or porcelain stoneware. A tray version exists too, built in aluminium sheet, for a lighter, more informal reading of the same frame.
Because Formiche is built to be clustered, it suits a living room where several small tables replace one larger coffee table, arranged around a sofa at different heights so each becomes a landing spot for a drink or a book. Designers should choose between glass, porcelain stoneware and the aluminium tray version against the other surfaces in the room.
