Alcova takes the canopy bed and reworks it for a modern room. The bed is built to be positioned mid-room rather than against a wall, and the platform it rests on is deep enough to hold a service piece with its own open storage compartment at the foot of the bed.
The frame is solid wood, with the bed sides built on an internal structure of tubular steel and steel profiles and the headboard on a wood particle panel, both padded in a shaped polyurethane over a polyester fibre cover before the fabric or leather goes on. The platform’s internal top is an MDF wood fibre panel, and the slatted base underneath combines tubular steel with multi-layered wood slats. That base includes a raising mechanism operated by a manually controlled gas-lift, and the whole structure sits on adjustable steel and plastic ferrules to level it on the floor.
Because it is designed to stand mid-room rather than against a wall, Alcova suits a primary bedroom large enough to walk around the bed on every side, with the service element at the foot of the bed as part of the composition. Designers working with Alcova should plan the room around the bed as a freestanding object first.
