Febo Sofa

Febo’s shape reaches back to a traditional idea: a large enveloping back with no armrests. That back is the design’s whole argument, and everything else, the two-seater and three-seater lengths and the two available sizes, one with a low or high seat cushion and one built larger throughout, is arranged around keeping that enveloping back as the piece’s identity.

The frame inside the upholstery is tubular steel and steel profiles, padded with a flexible, cold-shaped polyurethane foam faced in polyester fibre. The seat cushion adds sterilized down into its polyurethane fill for a softer top layer, and certain versions carry back cushions in down feather and polyester fibre in a box style. The base-frame and legs are solid wood, and Febo is also offered as a single-material piece with the base-frame covered in the same fabric or leather as the cushions. Both covers carry a visible blanket stitching detail rather than a hidden seam.

The enveloping back without arms suits a living room where the sofa is meant to be sat into rather than perched on, and the smaller size with its low or high cushion option gives a family room flexibility on seat height without changing the piece. Designers choosing between the wood-frame and single-material versions should think about whether they want the solid wood base-frame visible against the upholstery or covered to match it.
