Erik Headboard

Erik’s headboard is built from two panels rather than one flat piece, wall mounted and set at whichever height suits the bed in front of it. The top panel sits at a slight incline and carries a decorative element that keeps the design from reading as too plain, which is the headboard’s actual job: softening what would otherwise be a hard rectangular shape fixed to a wall.

A circular lace motif repeats four times across the upper panel, worked in either a matching tone or a contrasting one, and a blanket stitch border runs around the headboard’s upper perimeter. Both details reference the handmade lace tradition that made the Italian town of Cantù well known, where the local dialect has its own name for the specific lace pattern used on Erik. Underneath, the panels are built on a wood particle panel and solid wood frame, padded with shaped polyurethane over a polyester fibre cover, and fixed to the wall on galvanized steel brackets rather than resting on the bed frame. The cover is fabric or leather, both finished with the same blanket stitching used on the border.

Because it mounts to the wall at a height the room sets rather than the bed, Erik suits a primary bedroom where the headboard is meant to be seen as its own piece, and the lace motif gives it a detail worth being close to. Designers should decide on the mounting height before installation, since that is one of the few choices left once the panel and cover finish are set.
